HHH Metrodome Roof Collapse

Severe Winter Storm

In the winter of 2011, Minneapolis was inundated with more than 17 inches of snowfall in a historic snowstorm. Crews trying to remove snow from the roof of the HHH Metrodome were called down because of safety concerns over high winds. Just hours later, the buildup of snow, ice, and water proved to be too much for the inflatable fabric roof structure as it ruptured dramatically, spilling snow and ice onto the empty field.

Real-Time Analysis

Clark’s team was called to the scene to assist in structural assessments. We provided continual structural condition assessments of the dynamic loading on the roof; we also provided an overall limited structural condition assessment to analyze and verify the damage was limited to the roof. Clark’s 3D laser scanning crews scanned the deflated roof to assist in analysis of loads on the panels and the perimeter of the ring beam. This data provided accurate site conditions for the fabric roof manufacturer’s replacement work.

Clark provided documentation for each panel in a user-friendly, interactive PDF file format. This documentation was enormously helpful to the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC), as well as others working to repair the roof.

Experience Counts

With Clark’s knowledge and experience, the response was quick, efficient, and thorough. Having the experience dealing with catastrophic losses of all kinds allowed Clark to be an asset to the MFSC. With years of experience working on Metrodome projects, Clark’s engineers were a great resource for those entering the scene. Our expertise allowed seamless integration with the work done by other consultants in the replacement of the roof structure.
